Well, what do ya know? After our first blog post and subsequent follow-ups asking that the photo on the front of Dallas Fire-Rescue’s website be changed – it finally happened. The original full size photo showing a firefighter not wearing any respiratory protection while surrounded in smoke with a link to their Respiratory Protection Program has been replaced with rainbows … and the removal of the respiratory program link. After a long, hard fought battle, former Austin Firefighter Alejandro Garza lost his battle to keep his job after being accused of posing nude in AFD gear on a dating website. The accusations came forth from the husband of the woman with whom Alejandro had an affair with. An arbitrator sided with the Austin Fire Department yesterday which led to the official firing. Youtube account holder RJSILVIAJR (we will assume the firefighters last name is Silvia Jr) posted six simple pranks performed around the station. Turns out that you can’t fondle yourself in a Walgreen’s parking lot and ask a woman (with an infant) to touch your genitals for money. It’s against the law. Just ask FF Joseph Phillips of the Collingdale (PA) Fire Department. The incident occurred in the lot on Chester Pike near MacDade Boulevard in Darby outside of Philadelphia. Phillips allegedly told the woman that she aroused him and that he was unhappily married. (more…)

Check out this video from last nights Stockton Thunder hockey game in California. The fans honored a fallen firefighter through their annual Teddy Bear Toss. In the Thunder’s sixth annual “Teddy Bear Toss” game, fans were invited to donate stuffed animals to the ice surface on the first Thunder goal. Stockton ended up beating Ontario 4-1. (more…)

We just found out about Naugatuck Firefighter Tim Andrew who will be running the Empire State Building Stair Race for a disabled Connecticut veteran. The man, Bob Veillette, suffered a stroke that has paralyzed him from the nose down. The race on February 1st involves running up 86 flights of stairs, a total of 1,576 steps, to get to the finish line. (more…)

For those fire stations allowed, there is nothing better than a firehouse dog that greets you when you come to work or from a stressful emergency. For the East Dundee Fire Protection District that dog was named Bunkers. On January 7th, Bunkers was put to sleep due to a sudden onset of complications. Bunkers was 13. (more…)

While not totally fire department related, it is about loyalty. The one-eyed dog in the photo is named Zelda. Zelda was rescued along the side of a road by 12-year-old Josh Reed back in 2006. Three years later Josh was stuck and killed by a truck. The family says that Zelda has not left the grave site since. We don’t mean to put a damper on your weekend (our eyes are misty because of allergies, honest), but we do agree with BWE that you should enjoy your pets this weekend and give them a big hug for being the most loyal thing in your life. We stumbled upon their video (with 8 views) showing an obvious dislocated toe and ‘two C shift boys’ popped it back into place. The 2011 Jetlev Flyer is now available for purchase. That’s all well and good for average people. However, further examination of this new recreational vehicle tells me that a fire station shift of 5-8 could put this together in about 2 hours flat. I’m thinking a pumper, 4″ supply line, an empty SCBA bracket, a pike pole, a couple of smooth bore nozzles, and some summertime weather should make this work! Who’s in? (more…)

Because you probably were watching Auburn football last night you may have missed Winona Ryder on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Watching this NBC video clip reminds me of many old school guys in the fire department. How? Her knowledge of technology – or lack thereof. New this morning: CBS4 in Denver is reporting that the Mountain View Fire Protection District’s PIO is on administrative leave following his arrest for sexual assault. The arrest affidavit states that he had diaper fetish over the last year that possibly contributed to his actions and the loss of his marriage. As a result, his department is in the news even though none of his actions took place on-duty. (more…)
