Well, what do ya know? After our first blog post and subsequent follow-ups asking that the photo on the front of Dallas Fire-Rescue’s website be changed – it finally happened. The original full size photo showing a firefighter not wearing any respiratory protection while surrounded in smoke with a link to their Respiratory Protection Program has been replaced with rainbows … and the removal of the respiratory program link. Get A Grip! Apparently It’s Illegal To Touch Yourself In A Walgreen’s Parking Lot?

Turns out that you can’t fondle yourself in a Walgreen’s parking lot and ask a woman (with an infant) to touch your genitals for money. It’s against the law. Just ask FF Joseph Phillips of the Collingdale (PA) Fire Department. The incident occurred in the lot on Chester Pike near MacDade Boulevard in Darby outside of Philadelphia. Phillips allegedly told the woman that she aroused him and that he was unhappily married. (more…)

Cleveland Fire Department’s Lt. Kevin Brady Survives Heart Attack, Sought Out Help

Lt. Kevin Brady of Station 22, Cleveland Fire Department is featured today in a news story on WEWS-TV. In it, Kevin details how after a fire he felt, “a pain like I’ve never felt before” in his chest. Instead of ignoring it he told a paramedic in the station who hooked him up to the monitor to discover he was having a heart attack. Heart attacks are the #1 killer of firefighters in the United States. (more…)

San Antonio Fire Captain Gets 60 Days Suspension Over Reckless Fire Response

Fire Chief Charles Hood of the San Antonio Fire Department suspended three firefighters for traveling at an unsafe speed and not buckling up while racing to a fire on the Northwest Side last year. Firefighter Robert Arranaga, 30, was trapped and hospitalized with a broken neck and remains on medical leave. The crash destroyed Ladder 35 priced at $600,000. (more…)

Naugatuck Firefighter Running Empire State Building Stair Race For A Disabled Vet

[fblike]We just found out about Naugatuck Firefighter Tim Andrew who will be running the Empire State Building Stair Race for a disabled Connecticut veteran. The man, Bob Veillette, suffered a stroke that has paralyzed him from the nose down. The race on February 1st involves running up 86 flights of stairs, a total of 1,576 steps, to get to the finish line. (more…)

[fblike]For the record, we LIKE Dallas Fire Department. This is not meant to take a cheap shot at them whatsoever. That said, we were searching around fire department websites on another article project and came across the front page for the DFD. The main photo on the front page shows a firefighter standing in the window with no hood or respiratory protection. Reading the smoke tells us there is active fire. Why?? (more…)

Big Tree Volunteer Firefighter Dies After ‘Routine SCBA Training’

[fblike]WIVB in New York is reporting this morning tat a 26-year-old Big Tree firefighter passed away last night. The firefighter became ill during what the article calls ‘routine SCBA training Monday evening at the fire hall. The firefighter was rushed by the company’s ambulance to Mercy Hospital. His condition worsened and passed away last night. His name has not yet been released to the public. (more…)

NY TIMES: FDNY Firefighter Roy Chelsen Recalled As A Leader On 9/11

[fblike]This past Sunday, FF Roy W. Chelsen of FDNY Engine Company 28 died as a result of multiple myeloma, a cancer that many link to his incredible work on 9/11. He is also the first firefighter to die after the signing of the 9/11 Health Law. Today in the New York Times is an incredible article we recommend to all, from rookie to vet,  to read and discuss. It talks of a man when faced against a worst-case scenario stood up and made decisions that saved many on that fateful day. FF Roy Chelsen is a firefighter’s firefighter. (more…)

[fblike]We have no idea who kmworden87 is on YouTube, but we have figured out this much – they are career firefighters. We stumbled upon their video (with 8 views) showing an obvious dislocated toe and ‘two C shift boys’ popped it back into place. Another video below shows the crew using 18g IV catheter needles to pop cysts in an unknown persons ankle and wrist. Why is this firefighter getting so many cysts on their body? [fblike]The 2011 Jetlev Flyer is now available for purchase. That’s all well and good for average people. However, further examination of this new recreational vehicle tells me that a fire station shift of 5-8 could put this together in about 2 hours flat. ‘Diaper Fetish’ Firefighter’s Off-Duty Actions Puts His Department In The News

[fblike]New this morning: CBS4 in Denver is reporting that the Mountain View Fire Protection District’s PIO is on administrative leave following his arrest for sexual assault. The arrest affidavit states that he had diaper fetish over the last year that possibly contributed to his actions and the loss of his marriage. As a result, his department is in the news even though none of his actions took place on-duty. (more…)

Two New Bills To Address Steroid Use By New Jersey Firefighters

[fblike]Today in New Jersey, a state assemblyman will unveil legislation that will require law enforcement and firefighters to undergo fitness for duty evals if they are prescribed anabolic steroids or human growth hormone. Another bill will urge the Attorney General to add steroids to the list of substances that can be randomly tested for. (more…)

Federal Signal Announces Settlement With 1,125 Firefighters Over Hearing Loss

[fblike]Federal Signal Corporation today announced that it has reached a settlement with 1,125 firefighters, represented by attorney Joseph Cappelli, in connection with hearing loss claims. The public release from Federal Signal states that the agreement was reached after ‘complete defense verdicts’ with 18 firefighters and prevailing in three pretrial motions with three other plaintiffs. Athlete Registration Now Open For 2011 World Police & Fire Games In New York

[fblike]After several delays, athlete registration for the 2011 World Police & Fire Games is now open. The Games will be hosted by both FDNY and the NYPD with opening ceremonies scheduled for August 26, 2011. Game venues will be in various locations through the city boroughs. (more…)

Oregon Fire Chief Cited In Crash That Destroyed Two Vehicles

[fblike]The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says that Fire District 1 Chief Kevin Henson has been found at fault for a crash while responding to a commercial fire on Dec. 31. An electronic data recorder inside Chief Henson’s SUV state he was traveling 62 mph in a 45 mph at the time of the crash. The real kicker is that he was doing this in the opposing lanes. (more…)

2010 Firefighter Deaths A Record Low

[fblike]2010 saw the fewest on-duty firefighter deaths according to the United States Fire Administraton (USFA) since 1977 when data was initially collected. The initial report shows a total of 85 deaths with 15 of those classified as Hometown Heroes. (more…)
